Man United were denied a second successive victory in the Premier League by a late Olivier Giroud header.
United looked to be heading for the three points after Juan Maya put them ahead on the 68th minute. He swept home a left-footed finish from Amser Herrera’s cut-back. Herrera was a warrior in midfield throughout, breaking up attack after attack by Arsenal.
The only real highlight in quite a dire first half was a very big shout for a penalty. Nacho Monteal seemed to haul down Antonio Valencia in the box, but Andre Marriner waved away appeals. Mourinho was left furious by this decision and after the game, called United the unluckiest team.
Most of the action came in the second half, where Mata scored and then from Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain’s cross, Giroud headed in with Arsenal’s first effort on target in the match. United controlled the game for long periods, with Petr Cech making important interventions. This was keeping them in the game, and Giroud punished United’s failure to take advantage of the possession.
Mourinho is yet to beat Wenger in 12 premier league games, but this one felt like a defeat for Mourinho’s men. Also, Wenger hasn’t won at Old Trafford since 2006, but this will feel like more of a win for them as they came back.
Next up for United is Feyenoord at home on Thursday, which is a big game. Next up in the Premier League is West Ham next Sunday. They will be hoping for a win to bounce back from Saturday’s disappointment.
