Once again, Man United drew at home after dominating, which affects their pursuit of the Premier League’s top four.
United dominated the possession, but failed to break down a West Brom side, who had 11 men behind the ball pretty much all the time. United also struggled without the attacking threat of Zlatan Ibrahimovic and the creativity of midfielders Paul Pogba and Juan Mata. But, Ibrahimovic will be back for the next game at home to Everton on Tuesday.
Although United had 75% possession and 18 shots, they had hardly any clear chances and were mostly limited to long shots. Also, only three of those shots were on target. They managed to create one decent chance in the first half, with Anthony Martial heading wide from a Jesse Lingard cross.
West Brom’s defending was one of the factors for United’s failure to score, but their goalkeeper Ben Foster also pulled off a couple of fantastic saves. Marcus Rashford had a chance to play up front, but failed to score for the 19th Premier League game in a row. He forced Foster into a couple of brilliant saves.
Marouane Fellaini dragged a shot wide and Henrick Mkhitaryan had a great opportunity one-on-one with Foster, but Foster denied him. Jose Mourinho threw his bottle on the floor because of his disgust at United’s failure to finish off their chances.
One of Rashford’s shots saved brilliantly by Foster was a shot to Foster’s left. The other was at the end of the game – a free-kick heading for the top left corner, but Foster dived and pushed it away. West Brom had nearly scored just before that effort – Darren Fletcher having a shot which looked like a comfortable catch for David de Gea, but he spilled it. Luckily it came off the bar and back into his hands.
United have now drawn 11 games this season – more than any other side and including eight at home. They are in fifth place, four points behind fourth-placed Manchester City. They have stretched their unbeaten run in the league to 19 games, but they won’t be happy with a draw, and have now dropped 19 points at Old Trafford.
They still have another six games in the league and two games in the Europa League left to play in a hectic April. Winning the Europa League could be the best hope of making the Champions League.
West Brom came to this game looking like a team who would settle for a point, and Tony Pulis will surely be happy to come away with this result. They have consolidated their position in eighth place in the table.
Next up for United is another home game against Everton. Hopefully they can get back to winning games.
