Substitute Zlatan Ibrahinovic gave Man United a hard-fought victory over Championship Blackburn.
United were below par in this game, slow and sloppy in possession, while struggling to carve out clear-cut chances. But in the 17th minute, It was Blackburn who took the lead. Following excellent play by Marvin Emnes, Danny Graham with a well-taken finish into the corner. United responded with a fierce shot from Ander Herrera, which Rovers goalkeeper Jason Steele pushed away.
But they did equalise in the 27th minute. Henrick Mkhitaryan, who pulled the strings all game, played a fantastic precise pass through to Marcus Rashford, who rounded the keeper before slotting in. Craig Conway had a good chance for Blackburn, but put it over the bar when in a good position.
In the second half, United were struggling to get the goal to go in front. To help with this, they brought on talismen Ibrahimovic and Paul Pogba in the 62nd minute. In the 75th minute, Pogba picked out Ibrahimovic with and inch-perfect pass. Ibrahimovic tucked away from close range but the Blackburn defence gave him far too much time. It was his 24th goal this season. After the goal Sergio Romero saved United, making a triple save. Anthony Stokes had a goal rightly ruled out for offside.
United have set up a quarter-final tie against Chelsea. Next up is the second leg of the Europa League on Wednesday, the 22 February. Hopefully they can finish the tie off as they are 3-0 up from the first leg.
