Zlatan Ibrahimovic headed in a late equaliser to earn Man United a point against fierce rivals Liverpool.
United dominated large periods of the game and had a fair few chances in the first half. Paul Pogba, who didn’t have a very good game, missed a great chance in the first 20 minutes after racing through. Pogba’s game got worse in the 27th minute , when he clumsily handled a corner and referee Michael Oliver gave the penalty. James Milner coolly put away the penalty.
Simon Mignolet had a very good game in goal for Liverpool and denied United with some very good saves. In the first half, he saved Ibrahimovic’s low free-kick. He also saved superbly from Henrick Mkhitaryan’s shot, making a one-handed block. Liverpool resisted all the pressure in the first half and were threatening on the break.
In the second half, Liverpool continued to frustrate United, and they continued to be threatening on the break. It looked like they were going to end United’s unbeaten run and their winning run. It also looked like they were heading for second in the league. Georginio Wijnaldum had a chance, but instead of controlling it and then shooting, he headed it straight at David de Gea.
United made all their subs trying to make something happen, and in the end something happened. Substitute Marouane Fellaini headed against the post, before Antonio Valencia crossed in for Ibrahimovic to head home off the bar. Ibrahimovic has now scored 14 goals in his first 20 premier league games, even though he is 35. Wijnaldum had another chance right at the end, but he hit a soft shot at de Gea when through on goal.
United are still in 6th place, 2 points off Man City in 5th, 4 points off Arsenal in 4th, 5 points off Liverpool in 3rd, 5 points off Tottenham in 2nd, and 12 points off Chelsea in 1st. Liverpool are now in 3rd place, seven points off Chelsea. United’s target at the moment will be to get into the top four.
Next up for United, they are away at Stoke. Hopefully they can get back to their winning form.
