Man United eased to a victory over Reading to go through to the fourth round of the FA Cup with Wayne Rooney equalling Sir Bobby Charlton’s goal scoring record.
He scored in the 7th minute with his right knee from Juan Maya’s lofted pass. Anthony had ran between two defenders before teeing up Mata to set up Rooney for the goal. The record of Charlton has lasted 44 years, but Rooney has scored the 249 goals 215 games and 4 seasons quicker.
Eight minutes later, in the 15th minute, Martial doubled the lead. He played a one-two with Rooney before curling a finish, without much pressure on him by the Reading players. United should’ve been out of sight by half time but, Marcus Rashford missed several chances. One of those was a open goal, but it was from a tight angle. United had 18 shots in the first half, the highest in a first half under Jose Moutinho.
The domination continued in the second half, with Mata shooting wide and Rooney coming really close to breaking the record. He had a close-range follow-up which was saved by Ali Al-Habsi. The third goal came when Michael Carrick’s pass split open the Reading defence and Rashford finished for his first goal in 18 games. He doubled his lead when Al-Habsi missed the ball attempting to clear and he was able to smash it in from a couple of yards out. Reading’s boss is former United defender Jaap Stam and it was an unhappy return for him.
This was United’s eighth win in a row in all competitions. They are also fourteen games unbeaten in all competitions. United’s next game is the EFL Cup semi-final first leg at home to Hull City on Tuesday. Hopefully they can get a win. Next up in the league is at home to Liverpool on Sunday, the 15th of January. Hopefully they can carry on their winning form.
