Two late goals for United turned the game around and gave them their fifth successive win.

United dominated the match and had plenty of chances, but could not break down a stubborn Boro side. Paul Pogba hit the post with an overhead kick and Anthony Martial also hit the woodwork with a long shot. There was also controversy over Zlatan Ibrahimovic’s goal being disallowed for a high foot on Victor Valdes, although his foot wasn’t near Valdes.

It was all the same in the second half, with United still dominating. But, in the 67th minute, Grant Leadbitter gave Boro a shock lead. He drilled home a low finish from Alvaro Negredo’s knock down. It was their first shot on target. After the goal Martial had a one on one saved by Valdez which he should’ve scored. It looked like Boro had claimed a win but, in the 85th minute Martial put the ball in the net from a Ibrahimovic knock down. 1 minute and 26 seconds later,  Pogba headed in from Juan Mata’s cross. It was similar to what used to happen under Sir Alex Ferguson, who was watching from the stands on his 75th birthday. With two minutes to go, Adam Forshaw tried to score with a long shot, but it did not trouble David de Gea.

United have now won 5 successive premier leaguegames for the first time since April 2015. They are also unbeaten in 10 premier league games. Boro are now only four points above the relegation zone after losing four of their last five. They have also scored the lowest amount of goals in the league, with 17. Aitor Karanka used to be Jose Mourinho’s assistant manager.

On Monday, the 2nd of January, United travel to West Ham hoping to carry on the winning run.
