Man United went through to the knockout stages of the Europa League with a comfortable win over Zorya Luhansk.
United dominated possession on a solid pitch, but struggled to break down their Ukrainian opponents. The best efforts they had in the first half were long shots from Wayne Rooney and Paul Pogba. Although they hardly touched the ball during the game, Zorya did have a chance in the first half, but Sergio Romero was equal to the effort. He was stepping in for David de Gea who was rested, looking ahead to the game against Tottenham on the weekend.
The goals came in the second half. In the 48th minute, Henrick Mkhitaryan dribbled from halfway, megged a defender, and slotted it past the keeper. It was his first competitive goal for United. After this goal, United weren’t very good at keeping the ball and Zorya started to come into the game. Romero made a key save from a free header from a free kick. But, in the 88th minute, Zlatan Ibrahimovic collected a Paul Pogba through ball and raced clear, before slotting home to seal the win. It was their first win away from home in this season’s competition.
United go through behind Fenerbahce, who beat Feyenoord away from home. Although they are favourites to win the competition, they are an unseeded side in Monday’s draw for the last-32. Their next game in the Europa League will be in February. Another positive in this match was that Eric Bailly made his return from injury and looked like he was in the same form as he was before his injury.
Man United’a next game is against Tottenham on Sundayand they will be hoping for another win..
